The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), FCT Council, has threatened to commence an indefinite strike if the Federal Capital Territory Administration fails to resolve the lingering dispute over the promotion of teachers.
The union is demanding the unconditional removal of the “vacancy” requirement for teachers seeking promotion, arguing that the policy has stalled career progression and affected eligible teachers in the FCT.
The NLC said the rescheduling of the 2025 promotion examination would not address the problem unless teachers are allowed to participate without the vacancy condition.

It also demanded the withdrawal of redeployment letters issued to directors of education agencies, their reinstatement, and the restoration of the management teams of the Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB) and Secondary Education Board (SEB).
The FCT NLC had issued a seven-day ultimatum to the administration, which elapsed on September 30, but said the ultimatum remains in force following an emergency meeting.
The union warned that failure by the FCT Administration to address the issues comprehensively could lead to an indefinite strike involving workers across the territory.
