A Nigerian-American citizen identified as Olaolukitan Adon-Abel has been confirmed dead while in custody at a detention facility in Georgia, United States, days after he was arrested in connection with a high-profile murder case involving a Department of Homeland Security employee.
Authorities said Abel, aged 26, was detained following an investigation into the killing of a federal officer, Lauren Bullis, whose body was discovered in Decatur on April 13, 2026.
Police reportedly recovered a 9mm pistol and shell casings at the crime scene, which later became key evidence in the investigation.
According to US prosecutors, forensic tracing linked the firearm to a purchase made in Atlanta weeks earlier.

Investigators alleged that the weapon was acquired through a third party who claimed it was bought on behalf of an individual known as “Abdul” or “Obie,” later identified as Abel.
Law enforcement officials also reported that ammunition and shell casings found in Abel’s vehicle matched those discovered at the scene of the crime. He was subsequently charged with multiple offences, including murder and illegal possession of a firearm, and was held at DeKalb County Jail pending trial.
Abel had prior criminal convictions in the United States, including assault on a police officer and misdemeanour sexual battery, according to court records cited by prosecutors.
However, on April 21, 2026, jail officials confirmed that Abel was found unresponsive in his cell. Emergency efforts were made to revive him, but he was pronounced dead shortly after.
Authorities said the exact cause of death was not immediately known, though foul play was not suspected, and an internal investigation has been launched.
Officials added that standard procedures would be followed to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
The case has drawn attention both in the United States and Nigeria due to the severity of the allegations and the sudden death of the suspect while in custody.
