A newborn baby girl has been rescued after she was allegedly abandoned inside a carton in Wuese village, Mbawar Council Ward of Konshisha Local Government Area of Benue State.
The infant was reportedly discovered by a resident, Mbakasev Yisa, who found her wrapped in clothes and in a critical condition.
The circumstances surrounding the baby’s abandonment remain unclear, while the whereabouts of her mother are yet to be established.
The councillor representing Mbawar Council Ward, Gabriel Mbaukaan, who disclosed the incident to journalists in Makurdi, said Yisa immediately alerted the police after discovering the baby.
According to Mbaukaan, police officers visited the scene, documented the incident and directed that the newborn be taken to a medical facility for urgent attention.
The councillor explained that the first clinic approached could not admit the baby because of the severity of her condition. She was subsequently taken to Dooshima Clinic in Wuese, where she is currently receiving treatment.
He said the infant is being fed with glucose and NAN infant formula while medical personnel work to stabilise her condition.

Mbaukaan disclosed that he had contributed financially towards the baby’s treatment and upkeep, while appealing for further assistance to ensure she receives adequate medical care.
He called on individuals, humanitarian organisations, community leaders, government agencies and other well-meaning Nigerians to support the newborn’s treatment and welfare.
The councillor added that members of the community are also making efforts to ensure the baby survives while attempts are being made to establish how she came to be abandoned.
“We are managing the situation at our own level as a community. We will do our best to ensure that the newborn baby gets well,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the Benue State Police Command said it had not yet received an official report concerning the incident.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Orchia Peter Aondongu, said he would contact the Divisional Police Officer in Konshisha Local Government Area to obtain further details.
“I will contact the DPO in the area over the incident and get back to you,” he said.
