The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has uncovered fresh attempts by drug traffickers to smuggle cocaine concealed in unusual items, including a traditional wooden mortar and a specially modified backpack, with the consignments bound for China and Italy.
The discovery was revealed in a statement by the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, on Sunday.
According to the NDLEA, one of the seized consignments involved cocaine cleverly hidden inside a wooden mortar — a common household tool traditionally used for pounding yam and grains. The item was reportedly being prepared for export to China.
In a separate interception, NDLEA operatives discovered another shipment of cocaine destined for Italy. The illicit substance was concealed in the false bottom of a backpack, which was further hidden among lace materials to avoid detection.

Babafemi cautioned the public to be vigilant, emphasizing the legal risks associated with transporting items for others without proper knowledge of their contents.
“Be wary of every parcel you are asked to deliver. The key word in liability is possession,” he warned.
The agency reiterated its commitment to intensifying surveillance and enforcement efforts to combat drug trafficking and prevent illicit substances from leaving the country.
This latest operation highlights the evolving tactics of drug traffickers and the continued vigilance of NDLEA officers in intercepting illegal shipments.
