Actress Obioma Ofoegbu

Nollywood actress Obioma Ofoegbu a.k.a Oby the art has shared her biggest challenge as actress in an exclusive chat with Potpourri .

“As much as I hate to admit it, being beautiful comes with a lot of challenges we’re never really prepared for, but it also has its privileges. Pretty privilege definitely exists in and outside the industry. It’s actually a blessing, and I’m glad that my beautiful facial features can speak for me even before people discover how intellectually sound or talented I am.”

Despite the perks, Ofoegbu revealed that beauty and fame can sometimes attract unwanted attention. “I’ve had a supporter track down all my social media pages and even show up on set just to take a picture. While that was sweet, it was definitely creepy.”

When asked what she would change about the industry, the actress emphasized the need for equal opportunities. “If I could change one thing, I would ensure that every actor gets the same amount of hype, PR, and opportunities — not just the popular faces. That’s something that needs to be tackled, but baby steps, I suppose.

She also opened up about her journey into acting, the challenges of the industry, and the impact of beauty on her career.

Ofoegbu revealed that her passion for acting began during her time as a student at Veritas University, where she joined the theatre arts group. “We started with plays and eventually produced our first short film, which was very exciting. I’ve always had a passion for acting and theatre since I was a kid, inspired by my aunty and cousins who are also Nollywood actresses,” she shared.

However, the actress admitted that the job comes with its fair share of sacrifices. “One of the biggest challenges I’ve faced is having basically no life outside of work. The job requires so much of your time, especially when you have multiple gigs happening simultaneously. You end up with less time for family and friends, but the people who love you will understand.”

Reflecting on her most demanding role so far, Ofoegbu recounted playing a character with dual personalities in an alternate reality. “I had to portray a political escort and a bookworm — two opposing characters. Switching between the two in different scenes was challenging because they each had unique mannerisms and tones that made them stand out. It tested my versatility, and I absolutely enjoyed it.”
