France captain Kylian Mbappé has taken the lead in the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot, despite being level on goals with Argentina’s Lionel Messi.
According to FIFA, both players have scored eight goals each as of the end of the quarter-finals.
However, Mbappé currently tops the standings due to a superior assist record, having provided three assists compared to Messi’s two.
The French forward reclaimed the top spot after scoring in France’s quarter-final victory over Morocco, further strengthening his case as the tournament’s most prolific attacker.
Norway’s Erling Haaland sits in third place with seven goals, following his impressive brace against Brazil in the quarter-finals. England duo Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane are jointly fourth, each with six goals and one assist.
Further down the rankings, France winger Ousmane Dembélé occupies sixth position with five goals and two assists.

If players remain level, the total minutes played will be considered, with the player featuring fewer minutes ranked higher.
As it stands, Mbappé also holds an advantage over Messi in this category, having played fewer minutes so far in the competition.
With the tournament entering its decisive stages, the race for the Golden Boot remains intense, with several top players still in contention.
