Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has defended his decision to keep Cristiano Ronaldo on the pitch for the entire 90 minutes in their 1-1 draw with DR Congo on Wednesday. The result marked Portugal’s opening game of the 2026 World Cup in Houston.
Ronaldo’s performance drew criticism from fans and pundits who felt the 41-year-old slowed the team’s attack. Despite the backlash, Martinez stood by his captain, calling him the best goalscorer in football history.
