A female police inspector attached to the Ikotun Divisional Police Station in Lagos State has died after she was struck by a black Highlander SUV while on duty.
The incident occurred at about 2:25pm on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, around the Adekunle intersection of the Third Mainland Bridge, inward Lagos Island.
The deceased officer, identified as Inspector Mercy Bassey, was reportedly carrying out route-lining duties ahead of a presidential movement when the SUV hit her as she crossed the road.
A situation report from the Yaba Police Division stated that the vehicle’s registration number and the identity of its driver were unknown at the time of the report.
The driver reportedly failed to stop after the crash and sped away from the scene. Patrol officers who pursued the fleeing vehicle were also unable to apprehend the driver, who escaped to an unknown destination.
Bassey was taken to the General Hospital, Ebute Metta, where she reportedly died while awaiting medical treatment.
Police authorities said her remains would be transferred to the Infectious Diseases Hospital Mortuary in Yaba for preservation.

Following the incident, the Motor Traffic Division commenced an investigation aimed at identifying and arresting the driver involved in the fatal crash.
Investigators are also seeking CCTV footage from Control 5, Adekunle, which could help establish the vehicle’s identity and trace its driver.
The incident was contained in a situation report submitted by the Superintendent of Police in Yaba to senior police authorities, including the Commissioner of Police, Department of Operations, Ikeja.
The police said efforts were ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the crash and apprehend the fleeing driver.
