The Lagos State Government has arrested 27 suspected hoodlums for allegedly vandalising key structural components of the newly constructed bridge linking FESTAC Town to Alakija.
The arrests were made during a coordinated midnight enforcement operation carried out by officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force.
According to a statement issued by the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, the operation was triggered by the discovery of extensive damage beneath the bridge.
The enforcement exercise aligns with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s directive to sanitise the Lagos-Badagry Transnational Highway corridor by eliminating environmental infractions, illegal motor parks, roadside trading, and other unlawful activities.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had deliberately removed critical materials, including iron rods, steel reinforcements, and cables—components essential to the structural integrity of the bridge.
The government described the act as a grave threat to public safety and a direct attack on vital infrastructure investments.
“This criminal act poses a serious threat to public safety and undermines the government’s investment in critical infrastructure,” the statement read.
Authorities confirmed that all 27 suspects will be prosecuted in accordance with Lagos State laws.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding public assets, the state government warned that it will continue to take decisive action against individuals and groups involved in vandalism, environmental violations, and other criminal activities that endanger residents and infrastructure.
