The Indigenous People of Biafra has announced a total 12-hour lockdown across the South-East region on May 30, 2026, to commemorate “Biafran Heroes and Heroines Remembrance Day.”
The directive was issued by IPOB’s Directorate of State and signed by spokesperson Mr. C. Okadigbo. According to the group, the day is set aside to honor those who died in the struggle for Biafra’s self-determination, particularly during the Nigerian Civil War from 1967 to 1970.
IPOB stated that May 30 serves as a moment of sober reflection for the sacrifices made by those it described as fallen heroes and heroines. The group urged residents to mark the occasion through prayer, candlelight vigils, moments of silence, and family gatherings to remember the victims and support families still affected by the loss.

The organization declared a complete shutdown of activities in what it refers to as Biafraland from 6am to 6pm on May 30. During this period, there will be no vehicular movement except for emergency services, while markets, offices, banks, and schools are expected to remain closed. IPOB also advised parents and school administrators to keep children at home and called on market leaders and transport operators to comply with the directive for safety.
IPOB said it had officially notified all South-East governors and other stakeholders about the planned lockdown, with further consultations expected in the coming week. The group emphasized that the remembrance is intended to keep alive the ideals of freedom, dignity, and justice for which many lives were lost.
The announcement is likely to raise security concerns and spark public debate across the South-East as the date draws closer.
