The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Chief Ikeje Asogwa of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the winner of the Enugu North Senatorial District by-election held on Saturday, June 20, 2026.
Announcing the results in the early hours of Sunday at the official collation centre, the Returning Officer, Prof. Christian Ezebe, confirmed that Asogwa secured a decisive victory with 162,360 votes.
His closest rival, Dr. Nestor Ezeme of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 9,299 votes.
Other candidates recorded significantly lower votes, with Chika Idoko (ADC) polling 1,676 votes, Osai Elias Okwudili (NDC) 3,129 votes, Eze Ejike Simon (LP) 1,027 votes, Ugwuanyi Charles Ugochukwu (PRP) 667 votes, and Aneke Kingsley Chukwuebuka (BP) 416 votes.
Prof. Ezebe stated that Asogwa, having met all constitutional requirements, was duly declared elected.
The by-election, conducted across six local government areas in Enugu North Senatorial District, was organised to fill the vacancy created by the death of Labour Party Senator Okey Ezea in November 2025.
Despite the overwhelming victory recorded by the APC candidate, the election was marred by widespread allegations of violence, voter intimidation, and electoral irregularities.
Reports from several communities in Udenu, Nsukka, and Igbo-Eze South local government areas indicated incidents of attacks on opposition supporters, disruption of voting processes, and alleged interference by political actors.
A viral video from a polling unit in Eluagu Obukpa, Igbo-Eze South LGA, showed a man allegedly instructing voters who were not supporting the APC to leave the polling area, sparking outrage among opposition parties.

In another incident, a PDP polling agent identified as Justice was reportedly attacked in Ogwu community, Udenu LGA, after refusing to abandon his duty.
He alleged that he was assaulted by suspected thugs, leaving him with severe injuries.
Similarly, a Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) agent was reportedly shot in Ihe Obukpa Ward while attempting to resist ballot box snatching. He is currently receiving medical attention.
Additional reports indicated that the PDP Ward Chairman in Ibagwa Ani, Nsukka LGA, was attacked, robbed, and stripped by armed individuals, while party materials belonging to opposition agents were destroyed.
Concerns were also raised over logistical and technical challenges, including delays in the arrival of election materials in parts of Udenu LGA and issues with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), which initially failed to capture the biometric details of the APC candidate before being resolved.
The PDP candidate, Dr. Ezeme, alleged that the delays were deliberate attempts to disenfranchise voters in his strongholds, further questioning the credibility of the process.
Security concerns heightened during the election as military personnel reportedly arrested several armed suspects believed to be political thugs. Some were allegedly found in possession of weapons, including a pump-action gun.
Despite the controversies and reported irregularities, INEC proceeded with the collation of results and officially declared Asogwa as the winner.
While APC supporters have celebrated the outcome as a strong mandate, opposition parties and observers continue to raise concerns over the integrity of the electoral process.
