The Anambra State Police Command has foiled an alleged attempt by a 21-year-old woman to sell her newborn baby girl in Igbariam, located in Anambra East Local Government Area of the state.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that operatives attached to the Oyi Divisional Police Headquarters acted on credible intelligence to prevent the alleged sale.
According to Ikenga, the police intervention took place on June 19 after concerned residents alerted authorities to suspicious activities involving the young mother and her infant child.
Upon arriving at the location, officers secured both the woman and the newborn before taking steps to ensure their safety. The police subsequently contacted the woman’s family members, who responded promptly and took custody of both mother and child.

Commending the vigilance of the citizen whose report led to the intervention, the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Ikioye Orutugu, reiterated the command’s commitment to safeguarding children from trafficking, abuse, exploitation, and neglect.
