A fresh communal conflict in Geroji and surrounding settlements in Mbamnga Ward, Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State, has reportedly displaced more than 1,000 residents.
The three-day violence, which began on September 16, left several communities devastated, with about 340 houses reportedly burnt. Women, children and elderly residents were said to be among those most affected, with many fleeing to neighbouring communities and across the border into Cameroon.
An unverified number of people were reportedly killed, while others remain missing. A Department of State Services (DSS) personnel was also reportedly among those killed, according to eyewitnesses and community leaders.
The crisis also resulted in the destruction of food supplies and livestock, including cattle and sheep, leaving many families without shelter, food, clothing and other basic necessities.

Sardauna LGA Chairman, Mohammed Umar, said the conflict reportedly followed a confrontation between a Mambilla woman and a Fulani man on a farm. He said security personnel had been deployed to the affected areas to restore peace.
Authorities are also making arrangements to repatriate residents who fled across the border into Cameroon, while community leaders have appealed for calm and support for the displaced population.
The latest violence has renewed concerns over the security situation on the Mambilla Plateau, which has experienced previous communal conflicts.
Humanitarian assistance, including emergency shelter, food, healthcare and clothing, is urgently needed as efforts continue to restore peace and support affected families.
