Severe flooding has displaced families, disrupted businesses and forced the closure of schools across several communities in Rivers and Delta states following days of heavy rainfall.
In Rivers State, residents of parts of Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor Local Council have been struggling to cope with rising floodwaters that have submerged homes, roads and business premises.
One affected resident, Vivian Onyeije, a mother of four from Rumusita, Eneka, was forced to move her family from their flooded home to her shop. When the water reached the shop, they moved to an uncompleted building before eventually seeking shelter inside their vehicle after another downpour flooded the area.
Several communities across Port Harcourt, including Eneka, Eliozu, Odili Road, SARS Road, Rupokwu, Rukpokwu, Rumuekini, Choba, NTA Road, Mgboba, Alakahia, Oyigbo, Atali and Iwofe, were reportedly affected.
The flooding also disrupted education, as students and teachers were forced to leave some schools. Businesses in communities such as Nkpolu and Rumuekini also shut down, while some churches and public facilities became inaccessible.
Residents described the situation as severe, with floodwater entering homes and destroying or floating away personal belongings.
Delta State has also recorded widespread flooding in communities across Udu, Uvwie, Warri, Ughelli, Agbarho, Okpe, Ughelli South, Agbor and Okpanam.

In Udu, floodwater overwhelmed the Udu Express Junction and affected several major roads and communities. In Warri and Uvwie, homes, shops, hotels, workshops, schools and vehicle yards were among the facilities affected.
The East-West Road around Effurun-Agbarho was also reportedly threatened by rising floodwater, while residents in parts of Ughelli South and Okpe were forced to abandon their homes.
Residents and environmental experts have linked the worsening flooding partly to blocked drainage systems, poor physical planning, indiscriminate construction along waterways and improper waste disposal.
They called for urgent clearing of drainage channels, enforcement of building regulations, protection of waterways and improved emergency response.
The Federal Government has also advised authorities to intensify monitoring of vulnerable areas and urged residents in high-risk communities to identify evacuation routes and protect vulnerable members of their households.
For affected families, however, immediate relief remains the priority, with residents appealing to both state and federal authorities to provide emergency assistance, restore drainage systems and support those whose homes have become uninhabitable.
The flooding has once again raised concerns about long-term flood-control measures and preparedness in communities vulnerable to heavy rainfall.
