The International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA), Rivers State chapter, has rescued a two-week-old baby boy who was abandoned at a shrine in Abua, located in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of the state.
The State Chairperson of FIDA, Tamunoibuemi Life-George, disclosed that the organisation acted swiftly after receiving credible information about the infant’s abandonment on Sunday, June 14, 2026.
According to her, the baby was found at the shrine under disturbing circumstances and was promptly rescued with the support of security operatives.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the child’s mother had initially left the baby in the care of the father due to financial hardship.
However, the situation reportedly took a darker turn when the child’s grandfather allegedly took the infant and abandoned him at the shrine in the middle of the night.

Following the rescue, FIDA ensured immediate intervention to safeguard the child’s life. The baby was taken to the Rivers State University Teaching Hospital in Port Harcourt, where he received urgent medical attention and is currently in stable condition, though further evaluations are ongoing.
In addition to the infant’s care, the organisation is also providing emergency support to the young mother to enable her to continue breastfeeding and care for her child.
Life-George appealed to well-meaning individuals and organisations to support the ongoing intervention, noting that financial assistance is urgently needed to cover medical expenses, nutritional needs, and welfare support for both mother and child.
The incident has once again brought attention to the growing concern of infant abandonment in Nigeria, often linked to poverty, lack of support systems, and family instability.
FIDA reaffirmed its commitment to protecting vulnerable children and ensuring justice and care for victims of neglect and abuse.
