Youths from Ososo, Ojah, Ijiranmi and other communities in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area of Edo State have protested an eight-month power outage in the area.
The protesters stormed the Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Power in Benin on Thursday, carrying placards and calling for urgent action to restore electricity.
The youths said the prolonged blackout had seriously affected businesses, commercial activities and development across the affected communities.
Speaking for the protesters, Bernard Gomina said residents had been without electricity for about eight months despite several efforts by community leaders and the lawmaker representing Akoko-Edo II Constituency, Donald Okogbe, to address the problem.
He said the lack of electricity had caused severe hardship for residents and business owners in the communities.
Another protester, Abayomi, alleged that residents had contributed large amounts of money to the Benin Electricity Distribution Company for repairs of faulty equipment on different occasions, but the electricity problem persisted.
He also complained about what he described as excessive estimated bills issued to residents despite the poor electricity supply before the total outage.
Abayomi called for an alternative electricity provider if the Benin Electricity Distribution Company could no longer provide reliable power to the communities.
Okogbe, who joined the protesters, said the affected communities were spread across the two state constituencies in Akoko-Edo.

He said the prolonged blackout had left residents frustrated and urged the authorities to consider removing the communities from the coverage of the electricity distribution company if it could not restore reliable supply.
The lawmaker stressed that electricity was important to economic development and the wellbeing of residents, urging the authorities to treat the situation as an emergency.
The Chief Executive Officer of Edo SEBCO commended the protesters for remaining peaceful and said efforts were already being made to resolve the problem.
He disclosed that the head of the technical team handling the area was already at the site and assured the protesters that electricity would be restored by Saturday.
The Chairman of the Edo State Electricity Regulatory Commission, Dr Shittu Shaibu, also said the commission was aware of the situation and was working towards resolving it.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Power, Paul Osenbo, asked the protesters to submit a detailed memorandum outlining their complaints.
He said the ministry was aware of the electricity challenges affecting consumers across the state and assured the residents that steps would be taken to address the problems.
