
A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr. Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room following an alleged encounter with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.
The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, in Esan West Local Government Area of the state.
According to the police, Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel with the woman before he reportedly became unconscious and later died.
The Edo State Police Command spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the incident was reported to the command on October 5, 2026.
She explained that the lecturer had allegedly asked the woman to get him some water. When she returned, she reportedly found him lying dead inside the hotel room.

Police authorities said three people have been arrested in connection with the incident, including the hotel owner, the manager and the 21-year-old woman.
The lecturer’s remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary while investigations continue.
Meanwhile, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a staff member of the institution.
He, however, noted that the incident occurred outside the university premises and involved the lecturer in his private capacity.
