A young girl from Ebonyi State has been hospitalised after her aunt’s boyfriend allegedly assaulted her with a bread toaster in Asaba, Delta State.
The incident reportedly occurred at Ikpoto, near Power Line Market, where the girl had been staying with her aunt.
According to a concerned resident who intervened, the man allegedly attacked the child while attempting to teach her how to count from one to five.
The suspect reportedly became angry because the girl was struggling to understand the numbers and was not performing well academically.
The child reportedly told her rescuers that she had recently arrived from her village and was experiencing life outside her community for the first time.
She also explained that her aunt was not at home when the alleged assault happened.
The girl reportedly sustained multiple bruises during the incident. She further disclosed that her aunt and the alleged attacker had recently been having disagreements.

She was initially taken to El Comfort Hospital at Bonssac Junction, Asaba, but medical personnel reportedly referred her to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Asaba, for a CT scan to determine the extent of her injuries.
The resident who helped rescue the girl said she could not accompany her to FMC because she was suffering from malaria.
She, however, maintained that she was committed to monitoring the situation alongside the other woman to ensure the child received the necessary treatment.
The incident has raised concerns about child abuse, domestic violence and the safety of children entrusted to relatives and other adults.
