A routine traffic enforcement exercise in Abuja turned chaotic after a man identified as an operative of the Department of State Services, DSS, allegedly opened fire on officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC.
The incident reportedly occurred on Thursday afternoon around the Idu area of the Federal Capital Territory when FRSC operatives attempted to stop a Toyota Carina driver over an alleged traffic offence.
According to reports, the driver ignored repeated directives to pull over and continued driving recklessly before becoming trapped in traffic near an FRSC command point.
Officials said the situation escalated after officers approached the vehicle to conduct routine checks on the driver’s documents and vehicle particulars.
The suspect allegedly became hostile, verbally confronted the officers and resisted the enforcement process.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that tension heightened when the man reportedly pulled out a pistol and fired two shots within the vicinity, causing panic among road users and passersby.

Despite the sudden gunfire, FRSC personnel were said to have acted professionally by restraining and disarming the suspect without returning fire. One marshal reportedly sustained minor injuries during the confrontation.
The suspect was immediately arrested and handed over to police authorities at the Life Camp Division alongside the firearm, ammunition and the vehicle involved in the incident.
Preliminary findings later identified the suspect as a DSS operative, while security agencies have commenced further investigation into the matter.
Reacting to the development, the FRSC leadership commended its personnel for showing restraint and professionalism during the tense encounter.
The agency also stressed that no security operative or public official is above the law, warning against the misuse of firearms and abuse of authority during interactions with law enforcement officers.
The incident has since sparked conversations over discipline, inter-agency cooperation and the conduct of security personnel in public spaces.
