Michael Carrick has officially been confirmed as the permanent head coach of Manchester United, signing a new two-year contract after an impressive run since his appointment in January.
The former United midfielder initially took charge following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim, with his short-term deal set to expire at the end of the season.
However, a strong turnaround in form and results has earned him the club’s full backing moving forward.
Carrick’s impact has been immediate and significant. When he took over, United were sitting seventh in the Premier League table.
Under his leadership, the team surged to a third-place finish, securing qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League with a game to spare after a 3–2 victory over Nottingham Forest.
In just 16 matches in charge, Carrick recorded 11 wins, three draws, and only two defeats.
His tenure began with a four-game winning streak, including standout victories against rivals Manchester City and Arsenal, setting the tone for a revitalized squad.
United’s resurgence under Carrick has been reflected in the league’s form table, where they have accumulated 36 points from a possible 48 the best record in that period. His performance has also earned him a nomination for the Premier League Manager of the Season.

Behind the scenes, the decision to appoint Carrick permanently followed what club officials described as a “thorough and discreet” selection process led by Director of Football Jason Wilcox.
The recommendation was approved by CEO Omar Berrada and aligned with the club’s ownership.
Carrick will continue working alongside his coaching staff, including Steve Holland, as the club aims to build on the stability and improved culture established over the past six months.
While pundits like Gary Neville have praised Carrick for stabilizing the club during a turbulent period, there is acknowledgment that the real challenge begins now.
With Champions League football returning, expectations will rise, and squad depth will be tested.
Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher believes Carrick deserves the role but questions whether he can deliver major trophies immediately, suggesting the club may still be in a rebuilding phase.
As Manchester United prepare for a demanding new season, all eyes will be on Carrick to see if he can transition from a stabilizing figure into a title-contending manager at Old Trafford.
