Real Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa has confirmed he will step down from his role at the end of the season, following a campaign that ended without silverware.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the club’s final La Liga fixture against Athletic Bilbao, Arbeloa acknowledged that he will not continue as head coach next season.
His departure comes amid strong reports that veteran Portuguese manager José Mourinho is set to return to the Santiago Bernabéu.
Arbeloa, who was appointed in January to replace Xabi Alonso, is now expected to make way for Mourinho as part of a managerial overhaul by club president Florentino Pérez.
Addressing speculation about a possible role within Mourinho’s backroom staff, Arbeloa dismissed the idea, stating clearly that he would not be part of the incoming manager’s technical team.

“Mourinho has a strong and experienced team he works with. If he joins, he will come with his own staff. There is no chance I will be part of that setup,” Arbeloa said.
Reflecting on his long-standing relationship with the club, the former defender expressed emotional ties to Real Madrid, where he spent several years as a player before transitioning into coaching at youth level and eventually the senior team.
“I hope this is not a final goodbye but a ‘see you later.’ Real Madrid has always been my home. I’ve been part of this club for about 20 years in different roles,” he added.
Arbeloa also admitted uncertainty about his future, noting that he will take time after the season concludes to decide his next move.
Saturday’s match at the Bernabéu will mark his final game in charge for now, as he aims to end his tenure on a positive note with a victory in front of home fans.
