Women from Tyomu community in Makurdi Local Government Area of Benue State have taken to the streets to protest the abduction of 18 residents, including eight women, who were reportedly kidnapped while travelling to Kogi State for a burial.
The victims were allegedly abducted by gunmen on Friday evening along the Adoka-Ankpa road, shortly after Adoka near the Benue-Kogi boundary.
The protesters blocked the Makurdi-Gboko road at Tyomu, Fidi Council Ward, demanding urgent government intervention to secure the release of the victims.
According to the protesters, the abductors demanded a ₦30 million ransom. Residents reportedly raised and paid ₦3 million, but the victims have remained in captivity.

The protest caused traffic gridlock for several hours as the women demanded that government officials come to the area and address their concerns before the road would be reopened.
The Chairman of Makurdi LGA, Joseph Keffi, later arrived with other officials and assured the community that the council would work with security agencies to secure the safe return of the abducted residents.
However, the Benue State Police Command said it had not received any formal report confirming the kidnapping. Police spokesperson Peter Aondongu said officers on patrol had sighted an abandoned vehicle along the route and suspected that its occupants might have been abducted.
He added that the police could not confirm the number of victims until further details were made available, while appealing to the community for patience as security operatives work to rescue those affected.
