The Benue State Government has sealed Orenda and Opal Schools over alleged victimisation of learners and violations of the state’s textbook purchase and reuse policy.
The closure was carried out by the Benue Education Quality Assurance and Examinations Board (BEQAEB), led by its Executive Secretary, Dr. Terna Francis, after a court order authorising the action was served on the proprietor.
According to the Board, the affected schools allegedly disregarded government directives aimed at protecting parents from unnecessary financial burdens and ensuring fair treatment of learners.
The state’s textbook policy allows parents to reuse textbooks from older children for their younger siblings. Parents are also permitted to obtain textbook lists from schools and purchase the required books from external bookstores.
However, the Board alleged that the two schools insisted that parents purchase textbooks directly from them, contrary to the government’s policy.

The complaints further alleged that some learners whose parents had paid their school fees but could not afford the prescribed textbooks were punished, including having their homework left unmarked.
Parents who had already purchased the required books from external bookstores also reportedly faced restrictions, with school management allegedly insisting that they buy new copies directly from the schools or withdraw their children.
Dr. Francis described the alleged practices as unacceptable and inconsistent with efforts to protect learners’ rights and welfare.
The Board reiterated the government’s commitment to enforcing education policies that protect parents from unnecessary expenses and promote a fair learning environment for children across Benue State.
