Residents of Kebbe town in Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State are reportedly living in fear after suspected bandits demanded a ₦40 million levy and threatened to kill residents and set the community ablaze if the money is not paid.
According to reports, the bandits communicated the demand on Tuesday afternoon through a mobile phone delivered by a local farmer to the District Head of Kebbe.
The attackers initially gave the community five days to raise the money but reportedly extended the deadline to seven days following appeals from residents. The new deadline is said to fall next Tuesday.
The development was disclosed by conflict reporter Bakatsine, who said the telephone allegedly used by the bandits was later handed over to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in the area.
The bandits reportedly instructed that the phone must remain charged and accessible, warning that failure to answer their calls could trigger an attack on the town.
The fresh threat has heightened tension among residents, who are now faced with the difficult choice of raising the huge levy or risking another attack.

Kebbe has reportedly witnessed a series of security incidents in recent weeks. On August 15, suspected bandits reportedly stormed the town on motorcycles and engaged security personnel in a gun battle before allegedly looting shops and attacking security installations.
Residents also reported that the attackers invaded the Divisional Police Headquarters and later vandalised a vehicle belonging to the DPO at the General Hospital.
Earlier in August, troops of the Nigerian Army reportedly foiled an attempt by bandits to attack Asarara community in Kebbe LGA, forcing the attackers to retreat towards the Gwangi riverside area.
The security situation reportedly deteriorated further on August 17 following an attack on Ungushi community, where local sources claimed that at least 32 residents were killed.
As of the time of the report, the Sokoto State Police Command had not publicly confirmed the latest ₦40 million demand or provided details on measures being taken to protect residents.
Authorities are expected to intensify security efforts in Kebbe as the reported deadline approaches.
