The race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or has officially begun following the conclusion of the FIFA World Cup, with the voting schedule now confirmed ahead of the prestigious awards ceremony in October.
The award will be judged based on players’ performances between August 1, 2025, and July 31, 2026, covering both the club season and the recently concluded World Cup.

Spain’s 1-0 victory over defending champions Argentina in the World Cup final has significantly influenced the Ballon d’Or conversation, with several Spanish stars now emerging among the leading contenders.
According to the latest bookmakers’ odds, England and Bayern Munich striker Harry Kane is currently the favourite to win the award. Spain’s teenage sensation Lamine Yamal, Argentina captain Lionel Messi, and France forward Kylian Mbappe are also among the top contenders, while Spain captain Rodri remains in the race.
Meanwhile, reigning Ballon d’Or holder Ousmane Dembele has seen his chances of retaining the trophy decline after France failed to reach the World Cup final, eventually won by Spain.
With the voting period set and the World Cup now over, attention will shift to the final performances before the Ballon d’Or winner is crowned later this year.
