The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed that two people were killed in separate shooting incidents in Awka, the state capital, on Sunday evening.
The command, however, dismissed earlier reports suggesting that three people were killed during the attacks, stating that investigations so far indicate that two victims lost their lives.
In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the command said the victims were allegedly shot by suspected cultists travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla.
According to the police, the vehicle’s registration number was not immediately ascertained.
“Information gathered so far reveals that three unidentified persons, travelling in a silver-coloured Toyota Corolla, reportedly shot two persons at separate locations within Awka,” the statement said.
The police said operatives were quickly deployed to the affected areas after receiving distress calls and immediately began efforts to track down the attackers.
The victims were reportedly taken to a hospital, where medical personnel confirmed them dead.
The identity of one of the deceased was yet to be established, while the second victim was identified as Aiza Nwosu, described as a popular personality in Awka.

Police operatives also recovered N7,550, a Moniepoint ATM card and a pair of slippers from the scenes of the attacks.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, condemned the killings, describing them as unacceptable and a serious threat to the peace and security of the state.
He directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, for a discreet and comprehensive investigation.
The command said security personnel have also intensified patrols, surveillance and intelligence-gathering operations across Awka and neighbouring areas as efforts continue to apprehend those responsible.
The police urged residents to cooperate with security agencies and provide useful information that could assist in identifying and arresting the perpetrators.
