Alleged Medical Negligence: Sanwo-Olu Orders Probe into Death of Chimamanda Adichie’s Son -

The Lagos State Government has ordered an immediate and comprehensive investigation into allegations of medical negligence surrounding the death of Nkanu, the son of acclaimed Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, at a private hospital in Lagos.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu issued the directive through the Health Facility Monitoring and Accreditation Agency (HEFAMAA) following public outcry over Ms. Adichie’s account of the incident, which reportedly occurred on January 6.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Kemi Ogunyemi, the state government expressed deep sympathy to the bereaved family, describing the death of a child as a “profound tragedy.”

“On behalf of the government and people of Lagos State, we extend our sincere condolences to Ms. Chimamanda Adichie and her family over this painful and irreparable loss. Our thoughts and prayers are with them at this extremely difficult time,” the statement said.

The government reaffirmed its zero-tolerance stance on medical negligence and unprofessional conduct in health facilities across the state, stressing that human life remains its highest priority.

Dr. Ogunyemi disclosed that HEFAMAA has commenced investigations and has already visited the health facility involved. She said the probe would be thorough, independent, and transparent, aimed at establishing both the immediate and remote causes of the death.

According to her, the investigation will include a detailed assessment of clinical procedures, professional conduct, patient safety standards, and the roles of all parties connected to the case. HEFAMAA will also collaborate with the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and other relevant regulatory bodies to ensure credibility and professionalism.

The state government assured the public that the outcome of the investigation would be made public in the interest of transparency and accountability, warning that any individual or institution found culpable would face appropriate legal and regulatory sanctions.

While urging residents to remain calm and avoid speculation, the government reiterated its commitment to strengthening oversight of medical practice in Lagos to prevent a recurrence of such incidents. It further assured the Adichie family that justice and due process would not be compromised.
