Popular Nigerian actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, has urged Nigerians to prioritise their mental health, personal happiness and family relationships, stressing that life should not revolve around work alone.
Akindele gave the advice during an interview with CNN Africa, where she opened up about her emotional struggles, the pressures of public scrutiny and her ongoing efforts to achieve a healthier work-life balance.
The award-winning actress revealed that, despite her success in the entertainment industry, she sometimes experiences moments of sadness and emotional breakdown. However, she said she makes conscious efforts to recover, regain her strength and move forward.
According to her, public attention often comes with criticism and judgment, particularly when celebrities experience challenges in their marriages and personal relationships.
Reflecting on her experiences, Akindele admitted that there are times when she locks herself in a room to cry before finding the strength to pick herself up again.
She explained that learning to prioritise her mental well-being has helped her navigate difficult moments and become more intentional about her personal life.
The filmmaker also disclosed that she is gradually paying more attention to her appearance and self-care, noting that she previously focused so heavily on work that she sometimes neglected other aspects of her life.

Akindele said she is now making deliberate efforts to look after herself while continuing to pursue her professional ambitions.
She further emphasised the importance of creating time for family, observing that while work and professional achievements may eventually fade, family remains an important source of support.
“It’s not all about the work. You need time for your family because work will pass, but your family will be there,” she said.
Her remarks serve as a reminder of the importance of emotional well-being, self-care and maintaining meaningful relationships amid the demands of professional life.
Akindele’s message also highlights the need for people, particularly those constantly under public scrutiny, to set healthy boundaries, take care of their mental health and avoid allowing society’s expectations to determine their happiness.
Asenexpress reports that the actress continues to balance her thriving entertainment career with a growing commitment to personal growth, self-care and family life.
