Actor Cristo Fernández has completed a stunning return to professional football after signing for American second-tier side El Paso Locomotive FC following a successful trial period.
The 35-year-old Mexican is widely recognised for his role as Dani Rojas in the hit television series Ted Lasso, but before finding fame on screen, he had dreams of becoming a professional footballer.
Fernández played youth football in Guadalajara before a serious knee injury forced him to abandon the sport at the age of 15. He later moved to London, where he pursued acting and eventually gained international recognition through Ted Lasso between 2020 and 2023.
Despite his acting success, Fernández continued to nurture his passion for football. Earlier in 2026, he trained with the reserve side of Chicago Fire FC as part of his effort to relaunch his football career.

Speaking after signing for El Paso Locomotive, Fernández said the dream of playing professionally had never left him.
“Football has always been a huge part of my life and identity, and no matter where life has taken me, the dream of competing professionally never truly left my heart,” he said.
He added that his unconventional journey back into football was driven by determination and belief.
“Maybe I’m just a crazy man with crazy dreams… so being here with the ‘Locos’ actually makes perfect sense,” he said.
El Paso Locomotive head coach Junior Gonzalez welcomed the signing, describing Fernández as a valuable addition to the squad’s attacking options.
“Cristo is a great addition to our roster, adding another attacking threat to our forward line,” Gonzalez said.
Fernández’s remarkable switch from television fame back to professional football has since attracted praise from both football supporters and entertainment fans worldwide.
