The management of Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has suspended the implementation of its recently revised student charges following concerns raised by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC) and further consultations with stakeholders.
The university announced the decision in a statement on Thursday, October 8, 2026, explaining that the suspension would allow management to review the concerns expressed by students and assess the financial implications of the revised charges.
According to the university, the new charges were introduced to address rising operational costs and the financial pressures associated with providing essential services, including campus security, transportation, utilities and student welfare facilities.
However, representations from the SRC prompted management to reconsider the implementation and engage student representatives and other stakeholders in further discussions.

With the suspension, the revised charges will not take effect immediately as the university continues its review. Management has yet to announce when a final decision will be made.
The university also appealed to students to remain calm and continue their academic activities while consultations are ongoing. It assured them that further communication would be issued after the review process.
The development comes amid growing concerns over the rising cost of education and additional financial burdens on students in Nigerian universities.
Students are now awaiting the outcome of the consultations and further clarification from the university management on the revised charges.
