The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has declared a state of emergency across the region.
ECOWAS Commission President, Omar Touray, made the announcement on Tuesday during the 55th session of the Mediation and Security Council at the ministerial level in Abuja.
The meeting was called because of the rising instability in West Africa, including recent coups and attempted uprisings in several countries within the sub-region.
Omar Touray stated that these events underscore the urgent need for careful reflection on the future of democracy and the importance of strengthening the security of our community.
