The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that it will certify and publish the final register of voters on December 15, 2026, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The commission disclosed this in a statement issued by Mohammed Kudu Haruna, Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, while providing an update on the display of the Preliminary Register of Voters.
INEC said the exercise was conducted nationwide from October 9 to 15, 2026, in line with the provisions of Section 19 of the Electoral Act, 2026.
The physical display of the preliminary register at Registration Areas was intended to enable registered voters to verify their personal details and submit claims or objections where necessary.

However, following concerns raised by Nigerians and other stakeholders over the accessibility of the register, the commission said it had decided to make the preliminary register available on its online platform.
According to INEC, the decision is aimed at expanding public access to the register and complementing the physical display exercise already conducted across the country.
The commission explained that the online publication would provide more people with the opportunity to inspect the register, reinforcing transparency and public confidence in the electoral process.
It added that the processing of claims and objections arising from the exercise was ongoing in accordance with the Electoral Act, 2026, ahead of the final certification and publication scheduled for December 15.
INEC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability and the faithful implementation of the electoral law, expressing appreciation to Nigerians and other stakeholders for their continued interest and engagement in the electoral process.
The publication of the final register is a key preparatory step towards the 2027 general elections, as it will provide the official list of registered voters eligible to participate in the polls.
