The Borno State Police Command has explained that five men arrested in Maiduguri while wearing T-shirts marked “Tinubu Must Go” were detained over alleged possession of illicit drugs and conduct capable of causing public disturbance.
The suspects were arrested on September 25, 2026, during a routine patrol around the West End Roundabout area of Maiduguri, according to the police.
The command said officers allegedly recovered 15 wraps of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp, 100 tablets suspected to be D5, a shisha pot, a pair of scissors and two T-shirts bearing the “Tinubu Must Go” inscription.
Police spokesperson, Nahum Daso, said the suspects were questioned during a preliminary investigation before the matter was taken to court.

The command was responding to public reactions over the arrests, with some reports suggesting that the men were detained because of their political expression.
However, the police rejected that claim, insisting that the suspects were not arrested because of their political views or affiliations.
The command said the Nigeria Police Force remained a professional and non-partisan institution committed to protecting fundamental rights, maintaining public order and following due process.
It added that the prosecution would allow a competent court to examine the evidence and determine the matter.
The police urged members of the public to rely on verified information and allow the court to decide the case based on the facts presented before it.
