Four female passengers have died after a boat carrying eight people overturned at Dudduru Pond in Dutse Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The incident happened at about 4pm on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, near Kwadige Village, according to the Jigawa State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps.
The boat was reportedly travelling from Kwadige Village to Chai Chai Sabuwa Market when it capsized while crossing the pond.
Preliminary findings indicated that strong winds may have contributed to the accident.
Four passengers, all female, died in the incident, while the other four people on board were rescued.
The deceased were identified as 13-year-old Hasiya Mu’azu, 13-year-old Hauwa Lawan, 12-year-old Fatima Lawan and 13-year-old Dawsiyya Lawan.

The victims were later buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
According to the NSCDC, farmers who were working close to the pond rushed to the scene and helped rescue the surviving passengers after the boat overturned.
Residents of Kwadige and Kuna communities also joined the rescue and recovery efforts.
The Jigawa State NSCDC Commandant, CC Muhammad Kabiru Ingawa, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and residents of Kwadige over the tragedy.
He urged boat operators and passengers to exercise caution when travelling on waterways, particularly during periods of strong winds or unfavourable weather.
The Corps also advised people using boats for transportation to observe basic water-safety measures and avoid travelling when weather conditions could endanger their lives.
