A 45,000-litre tanker loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) overturned at Isimi in Epe, Lagos State, on Thursday, spilling fuel onto the roadway.
The incident, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), involved the tanker and a Ford pickup van that had reportedly stopped on the road after developing a mechanical fault.
LASEMA said the tanker overturned while attempting to manoeuvre around the stationary vehicle after one of its rear tyres slipped into a pit. The tanker subsequently fell onto the pickup van, causing the petrol to spill.
Emergency responders were alerted at about 10:19am, after which LASEMA’s response team stationed in Epe was deployed to the scene.
Several agencies, including the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, LASTMA, Lagos Neighbourhood Safety Corps, FRSC and the Nigeria Police Force, worked together to secure the area, control traffic and reduce the risk of a fire outbreak.

The Fire and Rescue Service reportedly applied chemical foam around the tanker and affected area as a safety measure.
Fortunately, no death or injury was recorded.
The remaining petrol in the damaged tanker was later transferred into another tanker, after which both vehicles were removed from the road and taken to Ketu Police Station.
LASEMA confirmed that the affected road has since been reopened to traffic.
The agency urged motorists, particularly tanker and other heavy-duty vehicle drivers, to ensure their vehicles are properly maintained and to exercise caution while using Lagos roads.
