The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Edo State Command, has destroyed five cannabis farms and arrested three suspected drug traffickers in a renewed crackdown on illicit drug activities across the state.
The operation, carried out over the past two weeks, uncovered cannabis plantations spanning a combined 2.27 hectares, with an estimated yield of about 5,674kg of cannabis.
The farms were discovered in forests across Ovia South West, Owan East and Owan West Local Government Areas. NDLEA Commander in Edo, Dr Mitchell Ofoyeju, warned that cannabis cultivation was increasingly spreading across the state’s forests and called on local government authorities to support efforts to curb the trend.
During one of the raids, operatives arrested a 39-year-old man, Sunday Segun, at Ogboha Forest. Another suspect, Hassan Mohammed, was arrested at Bob-Izua Park, Okada, with 7.1kg of cannabis. Three knives and charms were also recovered from him.

In a separate operation in Auchi, NDLEA officers intercepted a vehicle carrying a large consignment of illicit drugs. The seizure included 590 bottles of codeine syrup, 50,000 capsules of Tramadol 100mg, 100 tablets of Tramadol 225mg and 25,000 tablets of Diazepam.
A 25-year-old suspect, Jamie Zubaru, was arrested in connection with the drug seizure and is assisting investigators.
The NDLEA said it remains committed to tackling illicit drug cultivation and trafficking while protecting public safety and the health of Nigerians.
