The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Edo State Command, has arrested five suspected drug offenders and destroyed a cannabis plantation during separate operations across the state.
The Edo State Commander of the NDLEA, Mitchell Ofoyeju, disclosed this in a statement on Monday, noting that the operations formed part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to combat illicit drug trafficking and abuse.
According to him, NDLEA operatives on August 18 raided a cannabis plantation in the Ukaro Forest, Owan West Local Government Area, where three suspects were arrested.
The suspects were identified as Imohimi Ugbeje, 50; Usihoro Saturday, 27; and Bala Sunday, 23.
The agency discovered a cannabis farm covering approximately 0.496 hectares, with an estimated yield of 1,240.9 kilogrammes. The plantation was destroyed, while samples of cannabis stems and 5.5kg of processed cannabis were seized.
In a separate operation on August 19, NDLEA operatives raided an illicit drug warehouse in Ihumudumu, Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area.
The operation led to the recovery of 319 bottles of codeine-based cough syrup, 1,340 capsules of tramadol, 344 tablets of Rohypnol and 222 tablets of Danabol. No suspect was arrested at the warehouse, but the agency said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the suspected owner of the drugs.

Also on August 19, two men were arrested in Benin City for allegedly possessing “Canadian Loud,” a potent strain of synthetic cannabis.
The suspects, Zege Japhet, 29, and Ifeanyi Ogashe, 43, were found with a combined 290 grammes of the substance.
Ofoyeju reaffirmed the command’s determination to disrupt drug trafficking and urged residents to provide useful information that could assist security agencies in tackling illicit drug activities.
He also called on youths to engage in productive activities and remain aware of the dangers associated with substance abuse.
The NDLEA commander made the call at the inaugural National Youth Camp of the Scout Association of Nigeria in Benin City, where he stressed the importance of combining youth empowerment with drug-abuse prevention and community awareness.
He said the agency would continue its operations against drug-related crimes while supporting initiatives aimed at building a healthier and more responsible generation.
