
Irate youths in Ikpe Ikot Akpan village, Uyo Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, have allegedly killed an unidentified man suspected of attempting to steal a motorcycle.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, September 9, 2026, at about 7:05 a.m.
According to the Akwa Ibom State Police Command, the motorcycle reportedly belonged to a resident identified as Idoroenyin Udo. Preliminary investigations revealed that Udo allegedly resisted the suspected theft and raised an alarm, prompting some residents to pursue and apprehend the suspect.
Rather than hand him over to the police for proper investigation, members of the mob allegedly assaulted the man before setting him ablaze, resulting in his death.
The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, said the command has commenced an investigation and is working to identify and arrest those responsible for the mob action.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, condemned the incident and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands.
The police stressed that jungle justice is unlawful and dangerous, noting that it can destroy evidence, undermine investigations and potentially lead to the death of innocent people.
Authorities have assured that anyone found to have participated in the killing will face the law.
