The traditional ruler and the two victims were reportedly kidnapped on August 22, 2026, when gunmen invaded Igbesi community in Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State.
According to the police, the victims were rescued during a coordinated security operation around the Elerin/Ijomu-Oro axis.
The operation followed information received at the Oro Police Station at about 10am from a vigilante member who reported that one of his colleagues had sustained a gunshot wound in the hand while operating in the bush around Elerin/Ijomu-Oro.
Acting on the information, the Divisional Police Officer of Oro Police Station led a joint team comprising police personnel, military operatives and vigilantes to the area.
The suspected kidnappers reportedly opened fire after sighting the advancing security team, resulting in a gun battle. One of the suspects was killed during the exchange, while others fled into the surrounding area.
The security team pursued the fleeing suspects and subsequently rescued the monarch and the two other abducted victims, identified as Maryam Abubakar and Aisha Ilyasu.
The rescued victims were taken to a hospital for medical attention and were reported to be in stable condition.
The Kwara State Police Command attributed the successful rescue to intelligence-led policing, cooperation among security agencies and a swift response to credible information.
The Commissioner of Police in Kwara State, Ojo Adekimi, commended the personnel and other security operatives involved in the operation.
The command also disclosed that efforts were ongoing to apprehend the remaining members of the kidnapping gang, while security operations have been intensified across identified criminal hotspots in the state.
The police urged residents to remain vigilant and provide timely and credible information to security agencies to help combat kidnapping and other violent crimes across Kwara State.
