Thirteen residents remain unaccounted for following the release of 163 kidnapped victims from Woro and Nuku communities in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State, bringing renewed concern over the fate of those still in captivity.
The victims were among 176 women and children abducted during a deadly attack by armed bandits on February 3, 2026.
The National Chairman of the Kaiama Development Association (KDA), Yakubu Salihu, confirmed the development on Thursday, noting that while the majority have regained freedom after nearly six months, 13 individuals are yet to be found.
“Out of the 176 persons taken, only 163 have returned. That leaves 13 still missing. We are deeply worried about their whereabouts,” Salihu said.
The February attack on Woro community was particularly devastating, with reports indicating that over 100 people were killed during the invasion, while hundreds were displaced. Survivors have described the incident as one of the most traumatic in the area’s history.
According to Salihu, some of the women gave birth while in captivity, underscoring the harsh and distressing conditions endured during the six-month ordeal.
The freed victims are currently in neighbouring Niger State and are expected to return to Kwara on or before Saturday.
Upon arrival, they will receive medical attention, psychological support, and rehabilitation assistance to aid their reintegration into society.
Bandits Invade Kwara, Abduct Resident
Meanwhile, the KDA has renewed its appeal to the Federal Government to urgently establish a Nigerian Army battalion in Kaiama. Salihu stressed that the lack of adequate security presence has left communities vulnerable to repeated attacks.
“We are ready as a community to provide land and necessary support to ensure the quick establishment of a military base. This will significantly improve response time and help prevent future incidents,” he stated.
He further noted that existing security personnel in the area are overstretched and unable to effectively manage emergencies, making a permanent military presence critical for restoring safety and public confidence.
In addition to security concerns, Salihu called on government authorities to address the poor state of road infrastructure in the region, which continues to hinder both security operations and economic activities.
Residents remain hopeful that swift government intervention will not only secure the safe return of the remaining victims but also prevent a recurrence of such tragic events.
