Fresh waves of banditry have forced hundreds of residents to flee their homes in parts of Taraba State, following a series of violent attacks that have left several people dead and many others injured.
The attacks, which occurred over the past month, targeted multiple communities in Lau Local Government Area, including Kunini, Jimlari, Garin-Magaji, Donnada, and Garin-Dogo.
Reports indicate that at least five people lost their lives in separate incidents between June 30 and July 27, 2026, with most of the killings happening during attempted kidnappings.
Residents say the assailants, suspected to be heavily armed bandits, have intensified their operations, carrying out frequent raids and abductions.
Among those affected was the village head of Garin-Magaji, Jauro Tace, who was reportedly kidnapped at gunpoint and later released after a ransom was paid.
The growing insecurity has triggered mass displacement, with many families—particularly women and children—seeking refuge in safer areas.
Several displaced persons from Ruga Alhaji-Kadiri, Ruga Alhaji-Adamu, and Ruga Alhaji-Kamuwa have relocated to Garin-Dogo, where they are currently taking shelter.

Eyewitness accounts describe a tense atmosphere across the local government area, as fear continues to grip residents.
A local resident, Joseph Mustafa, revealed that the persistent attacks have made it nearly impossible for people to sleep peacefully.
“No one feels safe anymore. People are constantly on edge because of the activities of these bandits,” he said.
The resurgence of violence has also disrupted farming activities, raising concerns about potential food shortages in the region.
A government source, who spoke anonymously, warned that continued insecurity could lead to a looming hunger crisis if urgent action is not taken.
Meanwhile, some victims of the attacks are receiving medical treatment at the Federal Medical Centre in Jalingo. Survivors recounted that the attackers were equipped with sophisticated weapons, leaving communities defenseless.
Residents are now calling on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts in restoring peace and security in the affected areas, allowing displaced persons to safely return to their homes.
The renewed violence comes despite earlier gains in curbing banditry in the state, raising fresh concerns about the effectiveness of current security measures.
