A community leader in Bauchi State has been killed in a shooting incident, while police have arrested a suspect and recovered the firearm allegedly used in the attack.
The victim, identified as 55-year-old Jacob Bature, was the Mai Anguwa of Unguwar Ngas in the Inkil area of Bauchi Local Government Area. He was reportedly shot on the evening of July 19.
According to the Bauchi State Police Command, the suspect, 40-year-old Clement Anthony, allegedly armed himself with a locally made single-barrel gun before opening fire on the community leader at about 7:00 p.m.
Bature sustained serious gunshot injuries and collapsed at the scene. Residents alerted the police, prompting officers from the ‘A’ Division Township Police Station to respond.
The injured community leader was rushed to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital in Bauchi, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival. His remains have been deposited in the hospital morgue pending an autopsy.

Police said the suspect was arrested shortly after the incident. Officers also recovered the locally made firearm and an expended cartridge believed to have been used in the attack.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation. Authorities said the suspect will be charged in court after the investigation is concluded.
Reacting to the killing, the Commissioner of Police in Bauchi State, Sani-Omolori Aliyu, condemned the incident and assured residents that justice would be served.
He also warned against the illegal possession of firearms and urged members of the public to report suspicious activities to security agencies.
