
The Lagos State Police Command has launched a manhunt for gunmen responsible for the killing of the Organising Secretary of the Lagos State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Toba Ajiboye, popularly known as Toba Ijaya.
Ajiboye was reportedly attacked on Sunday evening while leaving the Fadeyi area of Lagos after visiting friends in the community where he grew up. The assailants opened fire on his vehicle, leaving him with multiple gunshot wounds.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment but later died from his injuries on Tuesday.
Confirming the incident, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abimbola Adebisi, said investigations had commenced and efforts were ongoing to apprehend those behind the attack.
According to her, the police have deployed additional personnel to the area to maintain security and prevent any breakdown of law and order.

A source familiar with the incident said Ajiboye regularly visited the neighbourhood to meet with childhood friends and was leaving the area when the gunmen struck.
A member of the transport union, identified simply as Taofeek, disclosed that three other occupants of the vehicle also sustained gunshot wounds during the attack. He said the victims remain in critical condition and are receiving treatment.
The killing has sparked concern among residents, with many calling for increased security in the area. Authorities, however, assured the public that there is no cause for panic as officers have been deployed to strengthen security.
The motive behind the attack has not yet been established.
Meanwhile, the Chairman of the Lagos State NURTW, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego, described Ajiboye as a loyal ally, trusted friend and committed union leader.
In a tribute, Sego expressed deep sorrow over Ajiboye’s death, describing him as a dependable pillar of the union whose dedication and support would be greatly missed. He also extended his condolences to the deceased’s family, friends and members of the union, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
