Belgium have suffered a major setback at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after midfielder Amadou Onana was ruled out for the remainder of the tournament with a serious knee injury.
The 24-year-old Aston Villa star sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during Belgium’s 4-1 victory over co-hosts the United States in the Round of 16. Onana was forced off early in the match after suffering the injury.

Belgium’s medical team confirmed that examinations revealed a complete ACL rupture, ending the midfielder’s World Cup campaign. Team doctor Brahim Hacee described the diagnosis as a significant blow for both the player and the national team.
The Belgian Football Federation said it has begun consultations with Aston Villa to determine the most appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plan for the midfielder. Despite being ruled out, Onana is expected to remain with the Belgium squad in North America until at least the quarter-final stage.
Belgium will now prepare for a crucial quarter-final showdown against Spain in Los Angeles without one of their key midfield players, as they continue their quest for World Cup glory.
