Nigerian Army troops have successfully foiled a suspected kidnap attempt by sea pirates along the Oron–Ibaka waterways in Akwa Ibom State, rescuing 37 traders and crew members without any casualties.
The operation took place at Akpa Aron Creek in Oron Local Government Area after security personnel received a distress call about armed sea pirates targeting a wooden market boat carrying traders.
Troops from the 2 Brigade under Sector 4 of Operation Delta Safe quickly moved to the area and intercepted the attackers. On spotting the soldiers, the suspected pirates reportedly opened fire in an attempt to escape. However, the troops responded, forcing the criminals to abandon their mission and flee the scene in a speedboat.
