
Residents of Adebiopon Village in Obafemi Owode Local Government Area of Ogun State were thrown into shock following the tragic death of a 50-year-old traditional priest, Muritala Shodiya, who reportedly set himself on fire.
According to sources within the community, the incident occurred on Wednesday evening in an uncompleted building where the deceased allegedly poured petrol on himself before igniting the fire. Concerned residents quickly intervened, extinguished the flames, and rushed him to the General Hospital in Ijaye, Abeokuta.
Despite efforts to save his life, Shodiya was pronounced dead on Thursday morning by medical personnel.
The deceased, popularly known as “Ifa,” was well known in the community for his involvement in traditional worship and fortune-telling. He had reportedly practised in Ijaye for several years before relocating to Adebiopon Village.

A community source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, disclosed that the late priest had been exhibiting signs of emotional distress prior to the incident. It was gathered that he had struggled with personal challenges, including the reported departure of his wife.
Another resident, identified simply as Kazeem, confirmed that villagers made efforts to rescue him upon discovering the situation. He noted that although there were initial speculations suggesting foul play, evidence indicated that the act was self-inflicted.
The Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the incident and stated that an investigation is currently underway. Police spokesperson, Babaseyi Oluseyi, said officers visited the scene, documented findings, and are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
The incident has sparked concern among residents, highlighting the need for increased awareness around mental and emotional well-being within communities.
