
Tragedy struck in Rivers State as gunmen shot and killed two police officers while leaving another critically injured during an attack in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on Monday night along the Obiri-Kwere axis, where the officers were reportedly carrying out a routine stop-and-search operation at a security checkpoint on the Mbodo/Aluu Road.
Eyewitness accounts revealed that the assailants opened fire on the officers at about 9 p.m., catching them off guard before fleeing the scene in a vehicle immediately after the attack.
The affected officers were said to be attached to the Aluu Division in Ikwerre Local Government Area. While two officers lost their lives on the spot, the third sustained severe gunshot wounds and is currently receiving treatment at a medical facility.
A video circulating online showed the lifeless bodies of the slain officers still in uniform at the scene, sparking outrage and concern among residents.
A voice in the background of the footage alleged that the attackers had been robbing in the area before targeting the policemen.

The attack comes barely 24 hours after the Rivers State Police Command announced the arrest of a suspected high-profile criminal, Austine Emenike, also known as “Oyibo.”
The suspect was reportedly linked to a broader criminal network, with security operatives recovering a locally made pistol, four single-barrel guns, and five live cartridges during the operation.
Confirming the latest incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state stated that investigations are ongoing. She also disclosed that the Commissioner of Police visited the scene alongside senior officers for an on-the-spot assessment.
Authorities have assured residents that efforts are being intensified to track down the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
This latest attack underscores growing security concerns in the region, as residents call for stronger measures to curb violent crimes and protect both citizens and law enforcement personnel.
