Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have successfully prevented a suspected kidnapping operation along the Benin–Abraka Road, rescuing passengers travelling in a commercial bus after armed men attacked the vehicle.
The incident occurred on June 21 near the NNPC Pipeline axis, where suspected kidnappers reportedly intercepted a bus belonging to Muyi Line Transport Company that was travelling from Abraka to Benin City. The attackers allegedly opened fire on the vehicle, forcing the driver to halt in an apparent attempt to abduct the passengers.

Following a distress call, officers attached to the Ugo Division swiftly responded to the scene and engaged the gunmen in a fierce exchange of gunfire. The police said the suspects were unable to carry out the abduction and fled into the surrounding bush after encountering strong resistance from the responding officers.
All passengers aboard the bus were rescued during the operation. However, one passenger, identified as Isaac Olotu Temitope from Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, sustained a minor pellet injury to his right toe during the attack. He was taken to a nearby health facility for treatment and was later discharged.
In response to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Edo State, Monday Agbonika, ordered reinforcement teams to intensify efforts to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects.
The police commissioner also commended the officers involved in the rescue mission for their prompt response and professionalism, reassuring residents and travellers that the command remains committed to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
