Lionel Messi has revealed he was furious with himself after missing a penalty during Argentina’s 2-0 win over Austria at the 2026 World Cup.
The Argentina captain stepped up from the spot in Monday’s encounter but failed to convert. He later made amends by scoring twice to secure all three points for La Albiceleste.
Speaking after the match, the Inter Miami forward admitted he struck the penalty poorly.

“Today, there was a moment where I was very angry about the penalty because I missed it,” Messi told reporters. “I kicked it very badly, and well, luckily, we were able to turn that situation around, take the lead, and get the three points, which is what’s important.”
Messi added that Argentina expected a tough contest, noting that every game at the World Cup is difficult and no team gives anything away.
The win keeps Argentina on course for the knockout stages.
