A 19-year-old university student in Delta State, DGreat Nwadozie, has been arrested by the police for allegedly possessing an illegal firearm and admitting plans to join a cult group.
The suspect was apprehended during a stop-and-search operation conducted by officers of the Delta State Police Command in Asaba. According to the command’s spokesperson, CSP Bright Edafe, the firearm was recovered from Nwadozie, while further investigations led to the arrest of three other suspects and the recovery of an axe from the prime suspect’s residence.
In a video released by the police, Nwadozie, who is studying Criminology and Security Studies at a university in Delta State, confessed to purchasing the locally made pistol in Onitsha. He stated that he paid N320,000 for the weapon through the assistance of a man identified as Godwin.

The teenager claimed he acquired the firearm for self-protection, alleging that he and others were frequently harassed by some individuals who demanded development levies from them.
“My name is DGreat Nwadozie. I am 19 years old. I am a student. I bought the gun for protection. Mr Godwin took me to where I bought it for N320,000,” he said during the interrogation.
When questioned about possible involvement in cult activities, Nwadozie admitted that he was preparing to be initiated into the Vikings Confraternity. He, however, expressed regret over his actions and pleaded for forgiveness.
Providing details of the arrest, Edafe said the suspect had initially disclosed that the firearm was purchased for N350,000 and that he was on the verge of joining the cult group. The police spokesperson used the opportunity to warn young people against engaging in crime, stressing that criminal activities often lead to imprisonment, injury, or death.
The arrest comes amid ongoing efforts by security agencies to curb cult-related violence and the spread of illegal firearms across Delta State and other parts of Nigeria.
In recent months, the Delta State Police Command has intensified stop-and-search operations and intelligence-driven raids targeting suspected cultists, kidnappers, and armed robbery gangs. In May, the command arrested 11 suspected cult members and recovered firearms, ammunition, and other dangerous weapons in separate operations across the state.
Police authorities reiterated their commitment to sustaining the crackdown on cultism, illegal possession of firearms, and other violent crimes, urging residents to provide useful information that could aid security operations.
